Information about the Pantry
Shepherd's Pantry began in 2004 as a free emergency food delivery service when a small group of volunteers began delivering food from a storage unit. By mid-2005 we needed a facility that could accommodate walk-in food service. A 1,200 sq. foot facility was acquired and in 2007 the Shepherd's Pantry became a California non-profit corporation with an official IRS designation of 501c3.
Additional leased space was continually added to accommodate an increase in clients and added programs and services. The current leased space totals 6,500 sq. feet and we have been serving over 5,000 families per year in our service area of 10 cities in the San Gabriel Valley.
Since the beginning we have added a clothing building, a food distribution building, a resource counseling and client intake area and tutoring rooms which also have a dedicated space for a haircut program with licensed stylists, a reading and math tutoring program, a summer camp for tutored students, a Christmas Toy Store, a Client Management Program and a Voucher Program for emergencies.
At the heart of everything we do is our volunteers which have grown from a handful to over 150 people who serve on an on-going basis. They include volunteers from churches, businesses, universities, civic organizations, interested community people and our own clients who want to "give back." They are a dedicated, compassionate group with a real heart for serving those in need. Because of their exemplary service we received Congresswoman Judy Chu's award in 2013 as the Outstanding Non-Profit of the Year.
